Grade 5 Students Put Their Biking Safety Skills to the Test at Giardini Margherita

Writer: ISBolognaISBologna

At the International School of Bologna, fostering real-world learning experiences is an essential part of our approach to education. Today, our Grade 5 students had an exciting opportunity to put their theoretical knowledge of road safety into practice during a hands-on biking safety session at Giardini Margherita.

Earlier in the school year, the students participated in a comprehensive road safety lesson led by local police officers. This classroom-based session covered essential topics such as understanding road signs, the importance of wearing helmets, right-of-way rules, and how to navigate different traffic scenarios safely. With this foundational knowledge in mind, today’s outing provided a chance to reinforce and apply these concepts in a real-world setting. The police officers set up a carefully designed cycling course within the park, complete with various traffic signs, pedestrian crossings, and intersections to simulate real road conditions. Each student had the opportunity to navigate the path on their bike, making decisions in real time and demonstrating their understanding of road safety principles. The officers provided guidance and feedback, ensuring that the students could refine their skills and build confidence in their ability to cycle safely.

The event was not only educational but also a fun and engaging way for the students to develop responsibility and independence as young cyclists. Seeing their hard work pay off, each participant was thrilled to receive an official "biking license" at the end of the session—an exciting reward for their efforts and a symbol of their readiness to bike safely in the community. A huge thank you to the local police officers for their time and dedication to educating our students on road safety. Their support helps instill essential life skills in our learners, preparing them to be conscientious and responsible road users. We also extend our appreciation to the teachers and parents who helped make this enriching experience possible. We look forward to seeing our students continue to practice safe cycling habits and apply their newfound knowledge beyond the classroom. Keep pedaling, Grade 5!
