On Friday, February 6th, the first round of the STEM Racing competition took place at the prestigious Dallara facility in Varano de’ Melegari, offering an inspiring and high-energy setting for a day dedicated to innovation, engineering, and teamwork. Our two teams, Taurus and Equos, took part in a demanding yet rewarding experience that challenged both their technical knowledge and their ability to perform under pressure.
Throughout the day, students competed by racing their cars and achieved strong and competitive times, demonstrating the effectiveness of their design choices and engineering strategies. In addition to the races, teams participated in the scrutineering process, during which their cars were carefully inspected to ensure compliance with technical regulations. This phase provided a valuable learning opportunity, allowing students to deepen their understanding of industry standards, precision engineering, and the importance of attention to detail.

Another key component of the competition was the design and engineering presentation, where students presented and discussed their concepts with a panel of professional judges. During these sessions, team members confidently explained their design decisions, problem-solving approaches, and development processes, responding thoughtfully to questions and feedback from experts in the field.
Our students—Luca Rauch, Sofus Hansen, Luciana Moussa, Ludovica Meroni, Dana Tinaoui, Julius Hent, Leon Ball, Emanuele Mondì, Niccolò Di Giovanni, and Filippo Molinari (who, despite being unwell, supported the teams enthusiastically from home)—demonstrated many of the IB Learner Profile attributes throughout the day. They showed themselves to be risk-takers, embracing challenges with courage; thinkers, applying critical and creative problem-solving skills; and, above all, excellent sportspeople, displaying respect, collaboration, and resilience in a competitive environment.
A particularly memorable moment of the day was the opportunity to meet Ing. Gian Paolo Dallara himself—a true icon of Italian engineering and motorsport. Meeting such a visionary figure was both an honor and a source of inspiration for our students, reinforcing the real-world relevance of their learning and aspirations.
As we now await the results to see whether our teams will advance to the next round of the competition, we do so with immense pride. Regardless of the outcome, Taurus and Equos have represented themselves and our community with professionalism, enthusiasm, and determination. They have given their very best, and their commitment and teamwork are achievements in their own right.
Well done, teams Taurus and Equos! We are incredibly proud of you.
