JOB DESCRIPTION

Italian Language Acquisition Teacher (PYP/MYP) — International School of Bologna. PYP/MYP | Full-Time (100%) | Short-Term Maternity Cover | Bologna, Italy

Role Overview

The International School of Bologna (ISB) is seeking an enthusiastic and committed Italian Language Acquisition Teacher to join our faculty on a 100% short-term maternity cover contract, starting immediately. Working across both the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and Middle Years Programme (MYP), the successful candidate will deliver engaging, inquiry-based Italian language lessons that support students in developing their communication skills, confidence, and intercultural understanding within a vibrant international school community.

Teaching & Learning

The teacher will plan and deliver engaging Italian Language Acquisition lessons aligned with the IB PYP and MYP frameworks, adapting content, resources, and methodology to meet the developmental needs and language proficiency levels of students across the PYP and MYP. Lessons will be communicative, concept-driven, and inquiry-led, encouraging students to use Italian confidently in meaningful contexts while developing their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. The teacher will design differentiated programmes of instruction that support a range of language abilities and learning needs, set high expectations for all learners, and implement fair and consistent assessment practices in line with IB guidelines. The teacher will actively promote the IB Learner Profile and foster students' appreciation of Italian language and culture, encouraging curiosity, open-mindedness, and intercultural understanding. The teacher will monitor student progress and communicate proactively with parents and colleagues, contributing to formal reporting cycles and informal updates as required.

Classroom & Community

The teacher will be a fully engaged member of the ISB community and will collaborate closely with colleagues across both the PYP and MYP to ensure curriculum coherence and a consistent approach to language learning. They will participate in relevant staff meetings, school events, assemblies, and other community activities as appropriate. The teacher will contribute to the wider life of the school and support opportunities for students to use and experience Italian beyond the classroom. The successful candidate will also liaise with colleagues across the school to share professional expertise, resources, and best practice, contributing to a collaborative and supportive learning environment.

Professional Development

ISB values every member of its team and is committed to providing a supportive and collegial working environment. The successful candidate will benefit from a full induction programme and access to relevant professional development opportunities. The teacher will participate in the school's performance management and appraisal processes and will be encouraged to engage in professional learning linked to both personal and school-wide goals.

Requirements

Candidates must hold a recognised teaching qualification appropriate to the age groups taught, with relevant experience in Italian language education. Experience within an IB environment, ideally across both the PYP and MYP, is strongly preferred. Candidates should demonstrate a strong understanding of inquiry-based and concept-driven approaches to language learning, as well as the ability to differentiate instruction for students with varied language proficiency levels. Native or near-native proficiency in Italian and fluent English are essential. Candidates should demonstrate a genuine passion for language learning, a collaborative and flexible working style, and a commitment to supporting students' academic, personal, and intercultural development.

Safeguarding

ISB is fully committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all learners. All appointments are subject to thorough background checks. The successful candidate will be expected to uphold and actively support all child protection policies and procedures and to participate in ongoing safeguarding training as required by the school.
