Welcome to the Primary School. Our Primary School is made up of 2 sections: Early Years (3-6 years) and Elementary (6-11 years). Both sections follow the Primary Years Programme of the IBO (International Baccalaureate Organization). Our school became an IB World School authorized to teach the Primary Years Programme in December 2009. If our job as educators is to prepare students for their future in an ever changing world, the PYP Programme allows us to do this. It is not a static curriculum, but a framework that includes not only the skills and knowledge students need today, but also tomorrow and the future where they will take their place in the world.
A Grade 5 student once remarked to me: ‘every time we start a new unit something happens in the news about that Unit.’ (We had just finished inquiring into Immigration and were about to begin a Unit on ‘The Changing Earth’/Extreme Weather’.) It is the relevance of the PYP Programme and the Units that motivates and engages our students and allows them to make connections between what they are learning and their own experiences in the real world.
What the PYP also enables us, as educators, to do is to teach children the skills they will need in this world and be able to transfer these skills to whatever context they find themselves in. After almost 12 years in International education I see this as essential: students develop skills that they can apply in different contexts whether it is a new school or a different country. The PYP works in our school and I believe, as a result, we are successfully preparing our students for the future.
