The School Day
The school day is from 8.50 to 15.30. There is a mid-morning break of 20 minutes, and a lunch break between 12.00 and 13.00 when lunch is served in the cafeteria. The younger children have a rest and play during the afternoon when necessary.
Cafeteria
Children are served a complete balanced meal based on Italian guideline. Parents may request different menus if their children have special requirements. Children can also bring a packed lunch. The menu is published weekly.
Library
The school library is a valuable resource that aims to provide a wide range of books in English and Italian. Pre-school children have regular visits to become familiar with the world of books. In the primary school, children learn to use the library in a more systematic way, for pleasure and for a variety of information.

Health and Safety
ISB is associated with a paediatrician who assists the school in establishing health guidelines and offers basic care to children when needed. There is always a qualified first aider on hand.
The school office keeps a record of each child’s medical history and doctor, and their parents’ emergency telephone numbers. Parents must notify the school whenever this information changes. The school checks vaccination records annually. We must comply with Italian national legislation in this respect and we cannot admit students who do not have regular vaccination records in line with Italian law.

Extra Curricular Activities
As part of the school’s purpose to facilitate a broad development of the whole student, an after school programme of activities will be developed. These activities provide students with the opportunity to explore their interests and nurture individual abilities and talents, contributing to their all-round social development.
The activities may include:
Sports
Languages and story club
Creative activities such as drama, art and construction
Additional use of computers
These activities will be an additional charge and prices will be published at the beginning of the school year.

The school will organise regular educational field trips in line with the content of the programme. There will be visits to places of interest that complement the units of study throughout the year.

Special Events
The school year is full of variety, both in learning and in the many special events.
Children appreciate aspects of Italian culture through participating in events such as Carnivale, they will be presenting their musical and drama skills in concerts and plays, and displaying their developing sporting prowess in Sports Day.
These events, aside from being fun and enriching activities for children, provide more opportunities for parents to join in the life of the school.

School Community
Families in the School Community
Effective communication between home and school is an important feature of schooling. We aim to provide every opportunity for families to learn about our programmes, objectives and philosophy of education. There are regular parents meetings and reporting sessions - and if we have any concern over a student’s progress then we will advise the family and offer advice.
Our ultimate goal, though, goes much further than this, as we set out to forge a genuine community in which parents feel a part of the school and play an active role through social initiatives as well as supporting the school in developing its human resources in the widest sense.

Children in School
Admission is open to all students who, in the school’s opinion, will benefit from a challenging, international, English language education which prepares them for higher education and a life of change and purpose.
ISB admits students whose academic, personal, social, and emotional needs can be met by the school’s programmes and services, and who can be integrated into a mainstream classroom. ISB can provide support for students with moderate learning and emotional/social difficulties and we expect that parents will discuss any issues during the admission process so that we can arrange the most appropriate placement and support for their children.
Decisions with respect to:
initial grade placement
promotion from one grade to another
retention in a particular grade
continued attendance at ISB are based on academic, personal, social, and emotional aspects of a student’s school record.

Placement in class
Students are placed into the correct class depending primarily on their age. The international norm for northern hemisphere schools is to have reached the required age on 1 September. However, the Italian system uses a different, much later, “cut-off” date.
Therefore, students identified as International will be placed in the class primarily according to international norms. On the other hand, Italian students who are likely to continue their education in Italy and in Italian schools may be placed in a class according to Italian norms. The final decision is made by the principal and will be based on the best interests of the child, taking into account the individual, academic, personal, social and emotional needs.
